Pontifical North American College, Vatican _ Roma _ Italy
The Pontifical North American College welcomes American citizenship seminarians and priests and spreading the Catholic education. Based on a project of Eng. Piero Enrico Galeazzi, the College was built in the park of Villa Gabrielli on the Janiculum Hill, and was inaugurated by Pius XII in December 1952 on the occasion of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.
The construction of the new wing of the Pontifical North American College was aimed to implement the entire building complex with a portion of the existing building where there was a masonry porch embankment link between the college and the theater. The demolition of the existing building and the construction of the new structure taller than the building next door, has maintained the same surface of the demolished building plus an additional portion of land lying on the south embankment. The development plan can be simplified into a rectangle of size 28,46×14,22 mt, for a gross surface of approximately 313 sqm, respectively divided in 270 sqm dedicated to served spaces and 43 sqm of services. In the high building is composed by a plan basement, nine
floors above ground and one covering floor. The implementation of the new construction has changed the arrangements of the external structure.
The main square has expanded towards the football field, so that the secondary access on the stairway reachable via a few steps. Likewise, the profile of the embankment of the field was shaped to accommodate the new outdoor space and the upper square is instead reduced, losing its symmetry with respect to the theater.
From the functional point of view the various levels are organized so as to have a clear separation between functional areas and served spaces, ensuring continuity with the adjacent structure and security of the entire complex. The escape fire staircase was therefore built on the south front, so as to allow a new path of exodus and simultaneously the vertical connection between floors and external and internal areas. This service space is also equipped with a lift and storage rooms on the first, second and third floor, as well as toilets.
Between the two bodies scale (the designed one and the pre-existing one)there are areas designated to different uses from floor to floor, so you have a unique function among the buildings. However, under the skin of the new factory, the building was equipped with the most modern systems of energy saving and biocompatible material, creating a system of building and insulation, ensuring maximum comfort and maximum consistency in accordance with the principles of modern energy saving.
